John joined the Citizens Air Force (RAAF Reserve) as a pilot in September 1941. After initial training in Australia he went to the U.K. in 1942 for advanced flying training. He was posted to 176 Squadron (Royal Air Force) in 1943. During his operational tour, he flew Beaufighters in a night defence and ground attack role over India, Ceylon (Sri Lanka) and Burma, taking part in the Battle of Imphal. He returned to Australia in October 1945. Post-war, he was a treasurer and life member of Hornsby RSL Sub-Branch.
