Alan was the eldest of three children of Albert George Bidgood (born 1889 at Snapper Point in Victoria) and Ivy May Wrigglesworth (born 1896 in Toongabbie, Victoria). Albert was a Driver in Mornington, Victoria and married Ivy in 1914.

Alan had been working in Melbourne as a Motor Mechanic since 1934 and was an Aircraft Hand at Training Depot RAAF Station Laverton when he enlisted in August 1939 in the RAAF. He was a Sergeant when he was Discharged in October 1945.

Younger brother Norman Clive served in the Australian Army in WWII (Service no: 372626) with 58/59 Australian Infantry Battalion.

Alan married Audrey helena Crole (born 1923 at New Haven in Port Philip Bay, Victoria) in 1942 in Malvern, Victoria. After his Discharge from the RAAF, Alan and Audrey moved to Newhaven in Flinders, Victoria and Alan was unemployed. The family moved to Oakleigh in Henty, Victoria where Alan worked as a Driver. In 1977 Alan and Audrey relocated to Wiama Waters at Port Philip Island, Victoria where Alan died in 1979, and Audrey in 1984
