Ronald was the third of five children of William Raymond Bilson (born 1890 in Sheffield, Tasmania) and Lillian May Crole (born 1894 in Warragul, Victoria). William had farmed in Gippsland, Victoria before serving in WWI as a Private (Service No: 5973), and was awarded the Military Medal in 1918. Ronald's Uncle John Henry Bilson served in the AIF as a Driver (Service No: 10974) in WWI, and older brother Raymond Jack served in WWII with the ACMF as a Private (Service No: V381068).

Ron married Valma Isabel Jane Crofts (born 1926 in Orbost, Victoria) in 1945 and they lived in Morwell in Gippsland where Ron worked as a Pasteuriser before securing employment with the SEC in the early 1950s. Ron died in Morwell in 1992 and Valma in 2000
