Joseph was the eldest of two children of Leo Victor Hardy (born 1887 in London) and Florance Margaret Buckley (born 1892 in Newcastle, Western Australia). Leo, a Clerk, and Florance married in Perth WA in 1915 and Leo served in WWI as a Private (Service No: 4030). 

Joseph was living in Bassendean in Perth WA and working as a Storeman when he enlisted in the CMF in 1942, and then served with the Australian Army from July 1942 as a Gunner until he was Discharged in 1944.

Following WWII Joseph worked as a Labourer in Perth and Wittenoom in WA. He died in 1967
