Biography contributed by Susan Weisser

Born on 31 March 1921 in Wagga Wagga, Norm attended South Wagga Primary School and the Wagga Wagga High School leaving with an Intermediate Certificate. On leaving school he worked for his father as a Builder’s Assistant though in May 1940 he had also commenced a course for the Police Entrance Exam. Norm was a keen sportsman playing Football (AFL), Rugby and Cricket. The Wulff and Bain families were friends and neighbours. With Reg Bain and Norm Wulff being the same age they were firm friends with both joining the RAAF in WWII.

Norm enlisted on 16 August 1941 (Service Number 413303). Norm trained as an Observer and a Navigator before being sent to the UK, leaving Sydney on 24 August 1942. He was assigned to 460 Squadron, the same Squadron that Reg Bain would later be assigned to and he had done 25 hours on operational flights before he was shot down.

On an operation to Hannover on night of 8 & 9 October 1943 he was the Bomb Aimer in Lancaster ED658 (AR-O). They were hit when they were over the German/Dutch border at 19,000 feet.  Their two main petrol tanks were pierced and ablaze and the order was given to abandon the aircraft. All crew escaped but were captured. The Pilot was believed injured in bailing out and subsequently died of his injuries whilst a POW. The Crew were

After interrogation, Norm was sent to Stalag IVB (POW number 259930). Stalag IVB was one of the largest POW camps in Germany. It was located about 8 km northeast of Muhlberg in Saxony (now Brandenburg), just east of the Elbe river and 48 km north of Dresden. Norm spent the next 18 months as a POW with the camp being liberated by the Russians on 23 April 1945.

He was repatriated to England and then returned to Australia on 9 September 1945. He was discharged from service on 5 November 1945 and returned to live in Wagga Wagga.
