Leslie was born in Sculcoates, Yorkshire, England, the second of five children born to Richard Booth (born 1875 in Hull, Yorkshire) and Gertrude Jane Jenneson (born 1876 in Hull, Yorkshire). The family was living in Durham in England when Gertrude died in 1918. Richard, a Boatswain in the Merchant Service, died in 1927.

Leslie arrived in Albany in Western Australia in 1923 and worked as a Motor Transpoter in Wellard and a Storeman in Fremantle before marrying Ethel Gladys Lyndon Edwards (born 1900 in Perth, WA) in 1933 in Fremantle. Leslie and Ethel moved to Kalgoorlie in WA where Leslie was working as a Health Inspector when he enlisted in the RAAF in 1942. He served as a Flight Lieutenant (Service No:267435) until his Discharge in 1946.

Leslie's younger sister Elsie Mary also immigrated to Australia, settling in New South Wales.

Leslie and Ethel moved to Albany, WA in the early 1950's, where Leslie continued working as a Health Inspector until he retired in 1968. Leslie died in 1977 in Albany WA and Ethel in 1986
