Jack was the eldest of seven children of John Wallace Campbell (born 1881 in Geelong, Victoria) and Olive Caroline Day (born 1881 in Bairnsdale, Victoria). John and Olive married in 1914 in Melbourne, Victoria, where John was a Salesman.

Jack was working as an Operator in Melbourne, Victoria when he married Dorothy Alma Hill (born 1919 in Fitzroy, Melbourne) in 1942 in Melbourne.

Jack served with the 77th Australian Mobile Searchlight Battery as a Lance Bombardier (Service No:VX121434/V54367) and was Discharged in December 1944. Brother-in-Law John (Jack) Gilson Hill (Service No: VX140379) served in WWII/

Jack and Dorothy settled in Melbourne, where Jack worked as an Operator and Process Worker. He died in 1986 and Dorothy in 2010.
