Hilton was the second of three sons of Walter (Watty) Bigou Charles (born 1889 in Emua Bay, Tasmania) and Winifred (Win) Amos (born 1895 in Portland, Tasmaia). Watty and Win married 1920 in Burnie, Tasmania where they raised their family. Watty was a Labourer.

Hilton's brothers - Baden Trevor (Service No: TX1587/T27911) and Wallace Darrell (Service No: TX1621F/T902872) - served in WWII.

In November 1941 Hilton, working as a Packer in Burnie, Tasmania, enlisted in the CMF, and served as a Private and Sapper (T27998) in New Guinea (13/02/1944 - 10/08/1944) and Bougainville (29/12/1944 - 07/04/1946).

Following his Discharge in May 1946 Hilton returned to Tasmania where he worked as a Labourer. In 1948 he married Dorothy (Dot) Elda Eldred (born 1928 in Burnie, Tasmania. Hilton and Dot raised their family in Burnie, where Hilton worked as a Labourer. He died in 2009 and Dot in 2016.
