Stanley was the eighth of ten children of Arthur William Cox (born 1877 in Wynyard, Tasmania) and Edith Laura Wright (born 1880 in Longford, Tasmania). Arthur, a Farmer, and Edith married in 1903 in Wynyard, Tasmania.

Stan was a Labourer in Wynyard, Tasmania in June 1940 when he enlisted in the Australian Army. Stan, a Private (Service No: TX3205) served with  HQ 9 Australian Division Employment Platoon, 18 Australian Infantry Training Battalion and 12/50th Infantry Battalion. He served in the Middle East (29 December 1940 - 22 February 1943), New Guinea (1 August 1943 - 1 March 1944), and North Borneo ( 15 March 1945 - 30 October 1946). 

Younger brother Harold Lindsay served in WWII with 2/40 Battalion (Service No: TX5868) and was a PoW in Thailand from 1942 - 1945.

Stan married Dorothy May Whish-Wilson (born 1928 in Launceston, Tasmania) following his Discharge in 1945 and they settled in St Leonard's in Bass, Tasmania where Stan worked for the Bass Canning Company as a Welder. Dorothy died in 1989 and Stan in 2011
