Fred was the eldest of three sons of Arthur William Phillip Crole (born 1895 in Warragul, Victoria) and Helen Augusta Mary Whish - Wilson (born 1903 in Ringarooma in Tasmania). Arthur, a Farm Manager and later Farmer, married Helen in 1924 in Trowutta, Tasmania where they raised their three children.

Fred had a family history of military service - Grandfather Frederick Charles Crole served with the AIF as a Sergeant (Service No: 364) and KiA in 1917; Father Arthur was a Private (Service No: 1225) in WWI and in WWII was a Private (Service No: T23419) with the Army Volunteer Defence Corps 4 Battalion, and youngest brother Lawrence served witht the RAAF (Service No: A6285) in the Korean War.

Enlisting in June 1943, Fred served as a Private (Service No: TX14799/T102580) with 12 Infantry Training Battalion. Following his Discharge in December 1945, Fred was working in Trowutta as a Labourer when he married Marjorie Joan Walsh (born 1929 in Launceston, Tasmania). Fred and Marjorie settled in Smithton, where Fred was a Labourer. Marjorie died in 2003 and Fred in 2015.
