Reginald was the eldest of four children of Walter Henry Crole (born 1890 in Warragul, Victoria) and Florence Helena Mears (born 1890 in Pakenham, Victoria). Walter, a Labourer and Florence married in 1913 in Leongatha, Victoria and later moved to Newhaven, in Port Phillip Bay, Victoria where Walter was a Fisherman and Boat Builder.

Reginald married Iris Kathleen Usher (born 1917 in Yorkshire, England) in Port Phillip Bay in 1937. He enlisted in the Army in August 1941, serving as a Sapper (Service No: VX62632) with 11 Australian Small Ships Coy. He was Discharged in December 1944 and died in an accident in 1946. 

Younger brother Mervyn served with the Volunteer Reserves RAN (Service No: PM/V498) in WWII; cousins - Floyd (Service No: VX40718) 102 Convalescent Depot; and John Sidney (Service No: PM6240) RAN - served in WWII. Uncles - Sydney Roland (Service No:10332) and Ernest George (Service No: 54867) served in WWI).
