John (Jack) was the sixth of seven children of William James Hill (born 1875 in Dunedin, New Zealand) and Ellen Alice Gilson (born 1882 in Sussex, England). William arrived in Melbourne, Victoria in 1880 and Ellen in 1884. William and Ellen married in Melbourne in 1907 - William worked as a Warehouseman and Salesman.

Jack was a Clerk in Auburn in Melbourne, Victoria when he enlisted in June 1943. He was a Private (Service No: VX140379) with 57th/60th Infantry Battalion - which 'had marched over more of New Guinea than any other formation'. He returned from New Guinea in Novemebr 1945 on board the Ormiston and was Discharged in April 1946.

Brother-in-Law John (Jack) Austin Campbell (VX121434/V53467) served in WWII.

Returning to Melbourne, Jack worked as a Clerk and in 1951 he married Netta Lillian Collings. Jack and Nett settled in Melbourne where Jack was an Accountant.
