GILLETT Bernard St Patrick MB BS

1901-1986

Bernard St Patrick Gillett was born in Pingelly, Western Australia, on 6th January 1901. He was the son of the Reverend F. C. Gillett and Mrs A. M. Gillett. He was educated at Guildford Grammar School and the University of Western Australia. He studied Medicine at the University of Adelaide and graduated MB BS, in fourth place, in 1928. He undertook a year as a junior Medical officer at the Adelaide Hospital. He married Lucy Hughes on 26th September 1942. He and his wife had a daughter born on 21st July 1946.

On 23rd December 1939, he joined the AAMC and was placed on the Reserve of Officers as an honorary captain on 2nd January 1940. He was appointed to AAMC in 5 MD, on 9th May 1940, and next day posted to 5 FdAmb. On 15th September 1940 he embarked on “HMT S1' for the Middle East, disembarking in Palestine. Gillett was posted to 2/7th FdAmb and went with the unit to Greece and the Island of Crete. He returned from the Middle East to 4 MD, on 29th March 1942.  He then went back to WA and was appointed as DADMS on HQ L of C on 1st April 1942. He was promoted temporary major on 18th May 1942, and confirmed on 1st September 1942, transferring to No. 3 Trg Wing Staff School on 18th November 1942. He ceased his secondment to the Militia and was appointed as DADMS 3 Australian Corps on 10th March 1943. He was attached as MO to the Staff School at Duntroon, in Canberra, on 29th March 1943. He was with the Australian Reception Group in the United Kingdom from 1944 to 1946 having travelled via the United States of America to the United Kingdom. Gillett returned from the United Kingdom and relinquished his appointment as DADMS on 1st October 1945. Gillett was admitted to 110 AGH for treatment of a right inguinal hernia on 30th January 1946, and placed on the Reserve of Officers before retiring on 21st March 1956.

Gillett was Honorary Consultant Gastroscopist at Royal Perth Hospital. Bernard St Patrick Gillett died on 27th February 1986.
