Ernest was the fourth of six children of Joseph Dobson (born 1875 in Enoggera, QLD) and Ida Lenette Dinte (born 1879 in Brisbane, QLD). Joseph and Ida lived in St Lucia in brisbane, QLD where Joseph was a Labourer before moving to Bulimba, QLD in 1924.

Ernest, a Labourer, married Catherine Ryan (born 1910 in Dalby, QLD) in 1933 in Brisbane, QLD. Ernest enlisted in the RAAF in September 1941, and was a Corporal (Service No: 43688) with 3 Medical Rehabilitation Unit. Both Ernest's younger brothers served in WWII - George Thomas  (Service No: QX2350) and John Frederick (QX41286).

Discharged in September 1945, Ernesta and Catherine lived in Wynnum, where Ernest was a Green Grocer and a Truck Driver. Ernest died in 1955 and Catherine in 1994.
