Alan was the youngest of seven children of Gordon McArthur Docker (born 1880 at Bontharambo in Wangaratta, Victoria) and Mabel May Dobson (born 1887 in Emu Bay, Tasmania). Gordon, a Farmer, and Mabel married in 1906 at Boat Harbour in Tasmania, which is where they raised their family. 

Alan was 18 years of age when he enlisted in the RAAF (Service No: 31117) in May 1941. He served as a Leading Aircraftman with 26 Repair and Servicing Unit, and was Discharged in January 1946. Older brother Bill served as a Driver (Service No: TX14441) with 123 General Transport Coy AASC until his death (accidental drowning) in December 1944.

Returning briefly to Tasmania following his Discharge, Alan moved to Melbourne, Victoria where, in 1948, he married Herilda Alice Herbert (born 1925 in Kew, Victoria). Herilda served with the Australian Wome's Army Service as  a Sergeant (Service No: VF510714) from May 1943 to May 1946.

Apart from a brief return to live in Emu Bay, Tasmania in 1954, Alan and Herilda lived in Bentleigh, Hotham in Victoria where Alan worked as a Carpenter, He was employed by the SEC when he died in 1974, Herilda died in 1970.
