SCHROEDER Arthur George MRCS LRCP
1897- 1952
Arthur George Schroeder was born, on 7th November 1897, in Adelaide, SA. He was the son of August Frederick Schroeder and Johanna, nee Goetjens. Schroeder was educated at Pulteney Grammar School and St Peter’s College and studied medicine at the University of Adelaide; he undertook his final year in a London hospital where he passed the conjoint examinations passing the MRCS LRCP in London in 1925. He was registered to practice in SA, on 11th February 1926. He also held the Diploma of tropical medicine although this qualification was not registered with the SA Medical Board. Schroeder married Marjorie Adela Nicholls, on the 13th April 1926, at St Michael and All Angels Church, Henley Beach. She was the daughter of William Nicholls and Sophia, nee Barnes of Henley. After several years in private practice in Adelaide, he became a medical officer for the New Guinea Administration travelling to Rabaul with his wife and 9-year-old daughter, in 1937. They were living in Wewak, New Guinea when WW2 began and he enlisted.
Schroeder enlisted in the CMF, in Port Moresby, PNG, on 14th December 1942 and served, at the rank of captain, in the AAMC, 8 MD, PNG. He served with 1st Papua Inf Bn as an RMO, from 14th December 1942 until 21st May 1943, when he was transferred to Australia with a posting to 64 Australian Camp Hospital, SA, from 27th August 1943 until 15th July 1944. He was assigned to 4MD, Adelaide, as MO to the SA L of C area discharge depot holding unit until his appointment was terminated on 6th March 1946 and he was placed on the Reserve of Officers.
Schroeder remained in Adelaide, after the war, and held an honorary assistant surgeon appointment at the Adelaide Children’s Hospital. Later, in 1948, he was to join the Commonwealth Department of Health as the quarantine medical officer for SA. Arthur George Schroeder died, in Adelaide, on 21st September 1952; survived by his wife and daughter (Mrs Peter Robinson).
