Charlie was the youngest of six children of Charles Gander Snr (born 1885 in Orange, NSW) and Victoria Maude Spicer (born 1885 in Orange, NSW). Charles Snr, a Farmer married Victoria in 1907 in Orange, NSW.
Charlie enlisted in the Army in October 1942 and was a Sergeant (Service Nos: NX125267/N197709) with 2 Australian Vet Hospital when he was Discharged in February 1944. Brother Cecil (Service No: 350415) also served in WWII.
Charlie returned to Orange in NSW and in 1944 married Elvie Jean Beasley (born 1923 in Orange, NSW). Charlie and Elvie settled at Orange, where Charlie was a Farmer. Elvie died in 1976 and Charlie died in 2008
