Albert and his twin Frank were the youngest of four children of William George Joy (born 1882 in Hawthorne, Victoria) and Florence Emily Churchus (born 1885 in St Kilda, Melbourne, Victoria. William, a Felt Hatmaker, and Florence married in 1911 in Melbourne, where they raised their family.

A Butcher at Kew in Melbourne, Albert enlisted in the Army in May 1943, serving as a Gunner (Service No:VX139085). In May 1944 when he was Discharged, he was with 7 AIT Brigade. Twin brother Frank (Service No: VX138940), brother William Sydney (Service No:VX127032), and Brothers-in-Law - Aubrey James Fletcher (Service Nos: VX88485/V59883) and Harold Dean Parker (RAAF; Service No: 120822) also served in WWII.

In 1944 Albert had returned to melbourne and was working as a Butcher when he married Annie Brennan (born 1916 in Footscray, Melbourne, Victoria). Annie was a Upholsterer. Albert and Annie lived in Box Hill, where Albert worked as a Butcher. Annie died in 1970 and Albert in 1999.
