Athol was the second of five children of William (Ben) Benjamin Holton (born 1887 in Cheshire, England) and Rosie Ethel Gates (born 1889 at Scottsdale in Tasmania). Ben - a Labourer - and Rosie married in 1909 at Myalla in Tasmania. The family moved to Launceston in the 1920s.

Athol, an Electrician, married Shirley Helen Docker (born 1919 in Hobart, Tasmania) in 1940 in Launceston. Athol enlisted in the Army in September 1942 and was a Lieutenant (Service Nos:TX6224/T22597) with 8 Australian Army Transport Coy RAE when he was Discharged in July 1944. Brother Eric Benjamin Holton (RAAF, Service No:30527) served in WWII, and Uncles Private Clifford Lionel Holton (5th Infantry Battalion; Service No:2167; KiA Gallipoli 1915) and Private Robert Frank Holton (59th Infantry Battalion; Service No:54915) served in WWI.

Returning to Launcestion after the War, Athol and Shirley settled in Launceston where Athol worked as an Electrician. Following Shirley's death in 1960, Athol remarried widow Enid Marion Belot (nee Dyer, born 1920 in Sheffield, Tasmania) in 1962. Athol and Enid moved to Franklin, Tasmania where Athol was a Sales Manager. Following Enid's death in 1982, Athol returned to Launceston, where he died in 2003.
