Dorothy was the second of four children of Harold Ireland (born 1882 in Yorkshire, England) and Mildred Cattley (born 1889 in Kent, England). Harold (a First Mate in the Merchant Navy) and Mildred married in Yorkshire, England in 1910 and immigrated to Sydney, New South Wales in 1911. They settled in Newcastle, NSW where Harold was a Master Mariner.

Dorothy was living at home in Newcastle, NSW when she enlisted in the WRAAF in July 1942. She was an Aircraftwoman (Service No:105466) attached to 2 Radio Installation and Maintenance Unit when she was Discharged in November 1945.

Dorothy was working as a Secretary when she  married John Moreton Hendry (born 1907 in Scotland). John and first wife Ethel had divorced in 1938, and John served with the AMF in 1936 (Service No:265889) and with the RAAF as a Flying Officer (Service Nos:02109113/127373) with 86 Squadron in WWI.

Dorothy and John lived in Sydney, NSW, where Dorothy worked as a Secretary and John as a Salesman until they separated and Dorothy moved to  Armidale, NSW in 1968 where she worked as a Secretary.
