John was the second of four children of John Kerr Snr (born 1863 in Scotland) and Margaret Black (born 1863 in Scotland). John Snr - who had worked as a Coal Miner from 9 years of age - immigrated to Brisbane, QLD in 1886, and married Margaret in Brisbane, QLD in 1888. They lived in Ipswich and Gympie, and John Snr remarried following Margaret's death in 1916.

John was a Carter in Ipswich, QLD in 1918 when he married Hannah Brown (born 1889 in Kalgoorlie-Boulder in Western Australia), John and Hannah settled at Booval in Ipswich, QLD where John worked as a Carter, becoming a Motor Driver in 1930. He enlisted in the Army in January 1942 and served as a Private (Service No:Q108663). John was attached to Northern Command Bulk Issue Petrol and Oil Depot, AASC when he was Discharged in October 1943.

John returned to Ipswich where he worked briefly as a Motor Driver before he and Hannah relocated to Parramatta in Sydney, NSW. John worked as a Motor Driver, and died in 1960. Hannah died in 1957.
