Ernest was the third of eight children of George Knop (born 1873 at Lower Longley in Tasmania) and Lydia Huxley (born 1872 at Longley in Tasmania). George - Fruit Grower in Lower Longley - married Lydia in 1896 in Hobart, Tasmania. They raised their family at Lower Longley, where George was a Fruit Grower.
Ernest was a Labourer at Lower Longley in 1928 when he married Amy Lillian May Roach (born 1911 in Hobart, Tasmania). Ernest and Amy Divorced in 1936, and Ernest was working as a Labourer at Huonville in Tasmania in November 1940 when he enlisted in the Army - his name was spelled 'Earnest' on his enlistment papers. Ernest was a Private (Service No:T11352) attached to 24 Australian Employment Coy when he was Discharged in December 1943.
In 1944 Ernest was in Melbourne, Victoria when he married Myrtle Silva/Silver (born 1906 in Bealiba, Victoria). Ernest and Myrtle lived in Melbourne, where Ernest was working as a Cleaner when he died in 1949. Myrtle remarried in 1950, and died in 1958.
