Before the war Dave was an avid sports lover,he played Tennis, Cricket and rode long distances on bikes and enjoyed stamp collecting with his father. He applied to join the RAAF in October 1941 and was called up in April 1942 for Pilot training in EATS, was found not suitable as a pilot and was sent to Canada to complete training as a Wireless Air Gunner before service with 62 Squadron RAF in India from June 1944 to December 1945 and rising to the rank of Warrant Officer.

On returning to civilian life with his previous employer, Commonwealth Steel he married Dorothy Jean Allen in 1946, fathered three children and was heavily involved with the initiation of Wentworthville RSL Club  serving as its Honourary Treaurer continuously from 1952 until his death in 1981 achieving Life Memberships  for his dedication to the club. He was respected for his forthright manner and honesty in all dealings.

Dave was happiest when serving others, particularly other ex servicemen who suffered after the war and noted for his entertaining ability with a mouth organ or harmonica.
