Fred (a twin) was the fourth of five children of George Alfred Linton (born 1867 at Black Flat in North Melbourne, Victoria) and Julia Crole (born 1866 in Healesville, Victoria). George and Julia married at Healesville, Victoria in 1890, and lived at Warragul before moving to Melbourne in 1900. George was a Railway Emoloyee, and in 1916 was Assistant Town Clerk.

Fred was a Builder in Melbourne, Victoria in 1926 when he married Linda Mary Edwards (born 1904 in Melbourne, Victoria). Fred and Linda lived in Melbourne, Corio and Toongabbie where Fred worked as a Labourer and a Railway Employee. They were in Yarck at Murrundindi in Victoria when Fred enlisted in the ACMF in June 1942. He was a Lance Corporal (Service No:V380314) attached to 16 Battalion Volunteer Defence Corps when he was Discharged on 1 October 1945. Twin Francis George (Service No:V364295) also served with the ACMF.

Fred and Linda lived in Melbourne, Oakleigh and Yarck in Victoria, where Fred was a Railway Employee, Fred died in 1982 and Linda in 1990.
