Francis (a twin) was the youngest of five children of George Alfred Linton (born 1867 at Black Flat in North Melbourne, Victoria) and Julia Crole (born 1866 at Healesville, Victoria). George and Julia married in 1890 in Healesville, Victoria and lived in Warragul before moving to Melbourne in 1900. George was a Railway Employee, and in 1916 he was Assistant Town Clerk.

Francis was a Grocer in Croydon, Melbourne in 1927 when he married Gladys May Bourke (born 1904 at Merton in Victoria). They settled in Croydon, and in March 1942 Francis enlisted with the CMF. He was a Corporal (Service No:V364295) attached to 3 Battalion Volunteer Defence Corps when he was Discharged in October 1945. Twin Frederick (Fred) William (Lance Corporal, Service No:V380314) also served with the CMF.

Francis and Gladys remained in Croydon where Francis was a Grocer. Gladys died in 1974 and Francis in 1977. in
