Samuel was the youngest of two children of James McCulloch (born 1874 in Scotland) and Catherine Jane Beamish (born 1877 in Wyndham, Victoria). James arrived in Victoria on board the Parramatta in 1887 with his parents - his father Samuel was a Farmer (Skaith Farm in Wigtownshire) in Scotland, and was a Farmer at Neerim in Victoria. James farmed at Warragul and Bunyip in Victoria.
Samuel was a Farmer at Bantry in Bunyip, Victoria when he enlisted in the RAAF in August 1942. He was a Leading Aircraftman (Service No:117516) at Laverton when he was Discharged. Uncle Colin McCulloch (Private, Service No:6374) was KiA in France in 1918.
In 1946 Samuel married Ruth Evelyn Peart (born 1921 in Melbourne, Victoria). Ruth's father - Emmerson Peart served in WWI (Lance Corporal, Service No:10324) and WWII (Private, Service No:V92107), and her brother Ronald Gregory (Leading Aircraftman, Service No:450144) served in WWII.
Samuel and Ruth settled at Boolarra in Morwell, Victoria where Samuel worked as a Motor Mechanic. He died in 1963 and Ruth in 1981.
