Albert was the second of five children of David James McDonald (born 1877 in Ballan, Victoria) and Janet Agnes Westerdale (born 1890 in Murchison, Victoria). David and Janet met in Tocumal, NSW and married in 1915. They settled in Finley on the Riverina in NSW and raised their family on their farm 'Retreat'.
Albert was a Farmer in July 1940 when he enlisted in the Army (Service No:VX46377) and was a Trooper attached to 2/12 Commando Squadron when he was Discharged in February 1946. The 2/12 Commando Squadron was raised in January 1944, and trained on the Atherton Tableland in QLD during 1944 and early 1945. The Squadron embarked from Townsville to Morotai in April 1945 as part of Operation Oboe in Borneo. The Squadron was involved in action on Labuan Island and was part of the Kuching Force which took the surrender in Kuching, Sarawak. The Squadron returned to Australia in January 1946 and was Disbanded at Puckapunyal in February. Brother William James (Corporal, Service Nos:VX81688/V24603) served with 20 Pioneer Battalion from 1942 to 1945.
Albert was a Farmer and back in Finley NSW in 1954 when he married Registered Nurse and Mid Wife, Monica (Monny) Helena Louise Baynes (born 1928 in Sydney, NSW). Albert and Monny farmed at Finley, NSW before moving in 1965 to Esperance, WA where they had their farm 'Brigadoon'. Albert died in 1998 and Monny in 2008.
