John was the youngest of five children of Sinclair James McGibbon (born 1875 in Kew, Victoria) and Rettie Paltridge Paterson (born 1880 on Kangaroo Island, South Australia). Sinclair was a Chartered Accountant in 1896 when he moved to Perth, Western Australia and established his own business (S J McGibbon and Co). He married Rettie in 1900 in Perth. They settled in West Perth where Sinclair expanded his Chartered Accountants business and held a number of positions on Boards and Clubs, including the WA Lawn Tennis Assn and Rotary, and as President of the King's Park Tennis Club (Who's Who).

John was a Dentistry student in 1942 when he enlisted in the RAAF. He was a Pilot Officer (Service No:427129) attached to Central Gunnery School when he was Discharged in 1945. Brother Kenneth Sinclair James (Lieutenant; Service No:WX32861), sister Rita Sinclair (RAAF, Service No:105474) and Brother - in - Law Keith Oscar Munro Baker (Flight Sergeant, Service No:54109) also served in WWII.

John completed his studies and was a Dentist in Perth in 1952 when he married Eunice Hogarth Baker (born 1918 in Bunbury, WA). Eunice had worked as a Salewoman and Manageress in Perth before marriage. John and Eunice lived in Perth, WA where John was a Dentist. John died in April 1978 and Eunice in June 1978.
