Fred was the fifteenth of seventeen children of Thomas (Tom) Alexander McKenzie (born 1851 at 'Little Scotland' in Geelong, Victoria) and second wife Elizabeth Davies (born 1853 at Batesford, Victoria). Tom helped his father with the cartage business, and at twelve or fourteen years of age was working as a Timber Cutter with his family at Eclipse Creek near Meredith, Victoria, and a little later had his own bullock team and worked as a Carter. In 1883 Tom married Elizabeth at Meredith in Colac, Victoria and they lived in the region until 1912 when they moved with their youngest children to South Gippsland. Tom share-farmed at Tarwin and Fish Creek before settling at Wonga and farming there. Tom died in 1924 whilst on horseback chasing pigs for market at Foster.
In 1927 Fred was a Labourer at Wonga when he married Hazel Irene Lonsdale (born 1905 at Toora, Victoria). Fred and Hazel settled at Buffalo in Foster, Gippsland, Victoria where Fred worked as a Labourer. In September 1941 Fred enlisted in the Army as a Private (Service No:V19796) and was attached to 3 Garrison Brigade when he was Discharged in November 1945. Brothers Alexander William (Private, Service No:14716) and John James (Private, Service No:3889) served in WWI, and brother Douglas (Pat) Patrick (Private, Service No:VX85160) served in WWII.
Fred and Hazel were in Buffalo when Hazel died in 1949, Fred worked as a Labourer in Frankston and Healesville in Victoria, and died in 1962.
