Sydney was the youngest of eight children of Thomas Earl Edwards Snr (born 1875 in Wales) and Isabella (Bella) Elizabeth Caldwell (born 1874 in Nerring, Victoria). Tom Snr was a Gold Miner at Bendigo, Victoria in 1898 when he married Bella, and in 1902 the family moved to the Goldfields in Western Australia where Tom Snr was a Gold Miner/Prospector at Daveyhurst until 1906 when they returned to Bendigo. Tom Snr worked as a Gold Miner until his death in 1930.

Sydney worked as a Miner at Sandhurst in Bendigo, Victoria and in 1939 married Machinist Kathleen Jean Mahar (born 1917 at Budgerum in Wimmera, Victoria). Sydney and Kathleen settled in Melbourne where Sydney was a Munitions Worker when he enlisted in the Army in February 1942. He was a Corporal (Service No:47334) with 2 Australian Beach Workshops when he was Discharged in January 1946. Brother Thomas Earl (Private; Service No:2401) and Brother in Law Hubert Charles Jason (Private; Service No:4118) served in WWI, and Brothers John Henry (Private; QX10577), and William Caldwell (Corporal; Service No:QX10578) served in WWII.

Sydney and Kathleen settled in Melbourne, Victoria where Sidney worked as Tram Driver until Retirement. Sydney died in 1991 and Kathleen in 2006.
