Lester was the eldest of six children of James Hannan Cyril Paul (born 1859 in Adelong, NSW) and second wife Sarah Wallace (born 1892 in Caboolture, QLD). James was a Station Hand in Adelong, NSW before moving to QLD to take charge of Spring Meadows Station at Dalby. James was an excellent horseman and had a keen interest in stock. He was a supporter of and exhibitor at the Dalby Show, was a Member of the Northern Downs Jockey Club and President of the Dalby Turf Club (Obituary 13 March 1929). He married Sarah in 1915 at Caboolture, QLD and they raised their family at Spring VMeadows Station in Dalby. James died in 1929 and Sarah in 1974.

Lester worked as a Stockman at Galloway Plains via Gladstone, QLD before enlisting in the ACMF in June 1942. He was a Gunner (Service No:Q151168) attached to 1 Australian Artillery Training Regiment when he was Discharged on 27 August 1943. He then enlisted in the RAAF on 30 August 1943 and was a Flight Sergeant (Service No:435791) attached to 4 Communications Unit Archerfield whjen he was Discharged in January 1946. Brother James (Jim) Arthur (RAAF; Flight Sergeant; Service No:429393); Sister Jean Audrey (RAAF; Aircraftwoman; Service No:102665) and Brothers in Law David Walter Bishop (RAN; Able Seaman; Service No:B3280) and Leslie Earl McDonald (ACMF; Service No:Q122673) also served in WWII.

Lester married Margaret Nairn (born 1924 in Adelaide, South Australia) shortly after his Discharge in 1946 and they moved to Geebung in QLD where Lester worked as a Builder for a short time. By 1954 Lester and Margaret had settled in Samford where Lester was a Farmer. Lester died in 2002 and Margaret in 2011.
