Alex was the only son of George Frederick White (born 1880 in Violet Town, Victoria) and second wife Florence Jessie Smith (born 1893 in Colac, Victoria). George was a Grazier and Florence a School Teacher when they married in Violet Town in 1918. George's first wife Jenny died in 1916 when their house 'Kingston Grove' at Boho was burned down - the children were sent to live with their grandparents in Brunswick.
Alex grew up in the small rural community of Boho - a farming and forest region near Violet Town. He was nineteen years of age when he enlisted in the Army in June 1940 and served as a Gunner (Service No:VX330) with 3 Light Anti Aircraft Regiment RAA until he was Discharged on 20 October 1942. Alex then enlisted in the RAAF on 21 October 1942, and was an Aircraftman 2 (Service No:429754) attached to 1 Embarkation Depot Ascot Vale when he was Discharged on 11 March 1943. Brothers-in-Law Captain Ronald Errington Campbell (Service No:VX330), William Leslie Parker (ACMF, Private, Service No:V353907) and Harold Dean Parker (RAAF, Leading Aircraftman, Service No:120822) also served in WWII/
In 1940 Alex married Hilma Parker (born 1918 in Melbourne, Victoria) and following the War they lived in Melbourne where Alex worked as a Clerk. In 1954 they were in Violet Town where Alex was a Farmer, and then moved to Henty in SW Victoria where Alex was a Grocer. Alex and Hilma moved again to Mulgrave in Melbourne where Alex worked as a Nurseryman until his Death in 1978. Hilma died in 1996.
