Walter was the seventh of eight children of William (Harry) Henry Pinker (born 1876 in Gloucestershire, England) and Mabel Devina Cook (born 1880 in Melbourne, Victoria). Harry immigrated with his parents and siblings in 1886, arriving in Fremantle, WA on board the Otag0 and Mabel come to Fremantle, WA with her parents and siblings in 1900. Harry was a Farm Hand in East Perth, WA in 1907 when he married Mabel, and they moved to Northam in 1911.

Walter was a Labourer in Northam, WA when he enlisted in the Australian Army in February 1942. He was a Private (Service No:WX19620) attached to 8 Australian Malarial Control Unit when he was Discharged in June 1946. Brothers Ted (Private, Service No:WX27492), Richard (Private, W83885) and Bob (Driver, Service No:WX33317) also served in WWII.

Returning to WA, Walter was a WA Government Railways Employee in 1947 when he married Elizabeth (Betty) in Fremantle. Walter and Betty settled in South Fremantle where Walter worked for the Railways until retirement in the early 1990s. He and Betty moved to Northampton, WA where Walter died in 1996.
