Ed was the second of six children of Charles Harold Vivian Skewes (born 1885 in Curramulka, South Australia) and Maude Emeline Lamphee (born 1885 in Gawler, South Australia), Charles joined the Western Australian Government Railways (WAGR) in 1902 as a Junior Porter at Northam WA when he was seventeen years of age. He was a Porter at Northam in 1912 when he married Maude in Midland Junction. Charles and Maude moved around SW Western Australia as Charles was promoted within the WAGR - Night Station Master, Assistant Station Manager and Station Manager in York, Mullewa, Southern Cross, Katanning, Canning Vale, Brookton, Wagin and Midland Junction.

Ed was a Truck Driver in Kalgoorlie, WA when he enlisted with the ACMF in March 1941. He was a Driver and Private (Service No:39390) attached to 28th Battalion when he was Discharged in December 1942. Brother Kenneth (Ken) McLeod Skewes (Private, Service No:WX39327) also served in WWII.

In 1941 Ed married Maisie Lawson (born 1918 in Perth, WA) and they settled at Bassendean where Ed worked as a Truck Driver, By 1958 Ed and Maisie had moved to Tuart Hill in Perth, WA where Ed worked as a Contractor until his death in 1973. Maisie died in 2014.
