Harry was the fourth of eight children of Henry Herbert Smith (born 1878 in Essex, England) and Ellen (Nell) Thirza Davis (born 1880 in Raymond Terrace, NSW). Henry and Thirza married in 1906 in Raymond Terrace, NSW and lived there until moving to Muswellbrook, NSW in 1919. Henry was a Farmer.
Harry had worked in the Colliery at Abermain in NSW and as a Farmer at Richmond Grove in Denman, NSW. He was a Labourer in Maitland, NSW in 1942 when he married Kathleen Mary Farrell (born 1918 in Leeton, NSW). Youngest brother Frank Nelson Smith (Private, Service Nos:NX18262/65447) was KiA in 1940. Harry enlisted in the Army in 1943 and was a Craftsman (Service Nos:NX171240/N276404) attached to 12 Australian Vehicle Park Workshop when he was Discharged in March 1946. Brother John (Jack) Lancer Smith (Private, Service No:N289209), and Brothers-in-Law Cyril Frank Prout (WWI, Corporal, Service No:6113/WWII, Private, Service No:N74141), Ivor Apsley Hewitt (Lieutenant, Service Nos:NX137589/N671) and Edgar Melville Lamb (Gunner, Service No:N154727) also served in WWII.
Harry and Kathleen settled in Maitland, NSW where Harry worked as a Labourer and then as a Technician, He died in 1980 and Kathleen in 2012.
