Jack was the second of eight children of Henry Herbert Smith (born 1878 in Essex, England) and Ellen (Nell) Thirza Davis (born 1880 in Raymond Terrace, NSW). Henry and Nell married in 1906 in Raymond Terrace, NSW where they lived until moving to Muswellbrook, NSW in 1919. Henry was a Farmer.
Jack married Daphne Jean Munro (born 1907 in Denilquin, NSW) in 1935 at Pennant hills, Hornby, NSW. Jack and Doreen settled at Pikes Gap in Denman, Muswellbrook, NSW where Jack was a Farmer. In March 1942 he enlisted in the ACMF (Private, Service No:289209). Younger brother Frank Nelson Smith (Private, Service Nos:NX18262/65447) was KiA in October 1940 and brother Henry (Harry) Raymond Smith (Craftsman, NX171240/N276404) and Brothers-in-Law Cyril Frank Prout (WWI, Corporal, Service No:6113; WWII, Private, Service No:N74141), Ivor Apsley Hewitt (Lieutenant, Service Nos:NX137589/N671) and Edgar Melville Lamb (Gunner, Service No:N154727) also served in WWII.
Jack and Doreen remained in Muswellbrook, NSW where Jack was a Farmer until his death in 1984. Daphne died in 1995.
