Alan served in the 21st Light Horse before, enlisting in 1929. In 1939 it was disbanded and Alan was transferred to various AIF units where he served in a variety of roles. He was in charge of a group of recruits who were sent to the Cowra prisoner of war camp to strengthen to camp's guard base prior to the Cowra Breakout. He played a key role in actions taken after the breakout. He also served in New Guinea in actions against the Japanese and follow-up actions after the war.
