Trooper Millhouse was on patrol in Bagdad, Iraq, in October 2004 when his armoured vehicle from 2nd Cavalry Regiment was hit by an improvised explosive device. He was knocked out by the blast but came to and went to the aid of his wounded commander Lieutenant Garth Callender. Lieut Callender, who made a full recovery from severe injuries, was present at his friend's service.
Three Australian soldiers were injured and several Iraqi civilians killed but Millhouse emerged from the episode apparently unscathed.
Once home Mr Millhouse gained work as a correctional officer but his health deteriorated. He was at first diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). But when his wife Terese noticed her husband's deteriorating speech, increasing anger and memory loss Mr Millhouse had a brain scan that revealed early onset dementia.
Two months later, he moved into a nursing home, and on Friday he ultimately succumbed to the disease, leaving behind his wife and young daughter, Eleanor.
He was 36 years old.
