Bernie was the third of five children of James Charles Streeter (born 1886 in Surrey, England) and Mary Kershaw (born 1885 in Yorkshire, England). James was a Private with the 5th Battalion Royal Fusiliers and Mary was a Silk Spinner when they married in 1911. James was awarded a CSM for gallantry, and was a Postman when he and his family immigrated to Fremantle, WA on board the Orvieto in 1924. James and Mary settled at Wilyabrup in the Margaret River region of WA where James was a Settler.
Bernie worked as a Farm Labourer at Cookernup in WA and enlisted in the Australian Army in June 1940. He served as a Private, Lance Corporal and Corporal with 2/28th Infantry Battalion in the Middle East (3 January 1941 to 18 February 1943) where he was WiA on two occasions - in July 1942 he received a GSW to the Temporal Region, and in October 1942 he suffered a Shell Wound to the chin, mouth, chest, forearm and calf. Bernie served in New Guinea (4 August 1943 to 2 June 1944 and 14 August 1944 to 10 June 1945). He was Discharged in September 1945. Brothers Ernest James (Private, Service No:WX3039) and Neville (Service No: WX500832), father James Charles (WOI, Service No:W24368) and Father-in-Law John Waters (Private, Service No:WX3690) also served in WWII.
In 1941 Bernie married Theresa Mary Waters (born 1921 in Toodyay, WA). Bernie and Theresa lived in Perth, WA where Bernie worked as a Mill Hand before settling in Fremantle. Bernie worked as a Panel Fixer briefly before becoming an Oval Curator. He and Theresa retired to Shoalwater (near Mandurah) WA where Bernie died in 1997. Theresa died in 2013.
