Biography contributed by Gary Lloyd

Ian was the oldest of two brothers born to Frederick and Marjorie Lloyd.  Ian's father Frederick was a veteran of WWI having survived the landing and final evacuation at Gallipoli as well as numerous other war campaigns.

Ian attended primary school at Malvern Grammar and secondary school at Melbourne Grammar where he obtained is Leaving Certificate in 1938.

On leaving school Ian worked for the Flack & Flack accounting firm before enlisiting in the Royal Australian Navy Volunteer Reserve at Port Melbourne in July 1941, at the age of 19, as an Ordinary Seaman.

Ian was posted to a number of ships, including shore-based establishments, before attending officers school at  HMS King Alfred in Hove, England, where he attained the rank of Sub-Lieutenant in October 1942.

Ian was subsequently posted to North Africa and while on a shore establishment was assigned to aircraft spotting duties.  It was these duties that resulted in partial but permant blindness, caused by constantly looking into the sun, since enement aircraft generally approached with the sun behind them to make it difficult to be seen.

Ian was sent back to Australia in November 1943 being deemed medically unfit.  His appointment was officially terminated in November 1944.

Following Ian's war service he worked in a number of different jobs before settling into his job with the publishing arm of the Pharmaceutical Guild where he remained until his retirement in November 1986.

During his working career Ian married and had three sons.  He was a Fifty Year member of the Melbourne Cricket Club and for may years played squash for the club.  With young children in tow the family would spend holidays at the beach fishing from his small boat and sailing his Gwen 12.

Following retirement Ian and his wife moved to the Mornington Peninsula and had numerous trips overseas.
