Gunner. Max William Thompson

Max served as a gunner in The Australian Army from 1940 to January 1946.
He was stationed in several Australian states and his unit was involved in the defence of Darwin against Japan. In May 1945, Max Thompson embarked on HMAS Kanimbla, where his battalion joined in operation "Oboe" to free Balikpapan, South East Borneo from the Japanese army. In July 1947 Max, married Dorothy Alberta Wing and are survived by Anne, Judy, Robert, Louise and Donald.

Max was the seventh of eight children of Robert Henry Thompson (born 1875 in Ireland) and Mildred Maud Peardon (born 1882 in Cornwall, England). Robert - a Railways Employee - and Mildred married in 1906 in Devonport, Tasmania. Mildred died in 1924 and Robert in 1937.

Max was living in Launceston with his older sister Gladys and her husband Alexander (Cyril) James Cameron and was a Textile Worker when he enlisted in the Militia on 10 November 1939. He served as a Gunner (Service No:490146) with 22 Light Horse and 6 Field Brigade. Max was Discharged on 9 April 1940 and enlisted in the Australian Army the next day. He was a Private (Service Nos:TX12564/T255102) attached to 2/12 Infantry Battalion when he was Discharged in 1946. Brothers-in-Law Alexander Cyril James Cameron (Service No:T155172), and Claude Albert Wing (Corporal; Service No:T42255) served in WWII.

Max was working as a Fitter in Launceston in 1947 when he married Dorothy Alberta Wing (born 1922 in Scottsdale, Tasmania) - Dorothy was a Factory Worker in Scottsdale. Max and Dorothy settled in Launceston where Max worked as a Fitter. Dorothy died in 1995 and Max died in 2000.
