Ethel was the toungest of eight children of Frederick Boys Yates (born 1850 in London, England) and Evangeline Treebey (born 1856 in London, England). Frederick arrived in Port Phillip Bay as a Settler in December 1870 on board the Newcastle. Evangeline arrived with her parents in Port Phillip Bay in 1857 on board the Planet. Frederick was a Builder and Contractor in Richmond, Melbourne, Victoria when he married Evangeline in 1877 - her father was also a Builder and Contractor. Frederick and Evangeline settled in Melbourne to raise their family.
Ethel was working as a Typist when she enlisted in the RAAF in April 1943. She was an Aircraftwoman (Service No:110250) attached to Hampton Convalescent Depot when she was Discharged in 1945. Brother James Treeby Yates (Private; Service No:2022) and Brother-in-Law Charles Edward Tirrell (Driver; Service No:14843) served in WWI.
Ethel remained in Melbourne, Victoria where she worked as a Typist and Clerk. Ethel died in 1982.
