Bertie was the third of four children of George Portlock Clark/e (born 1863 in Oxfordshire, England) and Annie Tanner (born 1861 in Oxfordshire, England). George (a Labourer) and Annie (a Domestic Servant) married in 1884 in Oxfordshire and in May 1888 the family arrived in Brisbane, QLD on board the Quetta. George and Annie moved to Melbourne, Victoria (where George was a Dealer) before moving to Perth, WA in the early 1900s. George was a Groom and Labourer in Perth, and following his death, Annie remarried in 1915.
Bertie was working as a Fettler on the WA Railways in 1916 when he enlisted in the AIF as a Private (Service No:3141) with 7/44th Battalion. He served in France with 8/48th Battalion and was Discharged on 21 September 1919.
Bertie worked in Wongan Hills, WA following his return from the War, and was a Labourer in 1923 when he married Susan Mary Therese Kerr (born 1904 in Northampton, WA). Bertie and Susan moved to Nannup in 1930, where Susan died in 1934. Following Susan's death, eldest daughter Teresa (11 years of age) tried to care for her four younger siblings, but the family was separated and each child lived with a different family member. Bertie died in 1955 at Nannup, WA where he was working as a Labourer.
