Robert was the seventh of eleven children of Louis John Gibbs (born 1886 in Canning, WA) and Edna (Kate) Kathleen Weir (born 1888 in Milparinka, NSW). Louis (a Civil Servant - Clerk with the PWD) and Kate married in Perth in 1908 where they raised their family.
Robert was seven years of age when his mother died (Louis remarried in 1931). He was working as a Truck Driver in Perth, WA in 1941 when he enlisted in the ACFM. He was a Private (Service No:W34214) with 7th Bomb Disposal Coy and was attached to 7 ATPS Coy when he was Discharged in November 1942. Brothers Senley and Norman, and four Brothers-in-Law also served in WWII.
Robert was working as a Labourer at the Midland Junction Railways Workshop in 1947 when he married Gladys Annie Pearce (born 1927 in Perth, WA). Robert and Annie settled in Perth, and Robert worked as a Welder. He died in 1974 and Annie in 1998.
