Bill was the second of four children of James Alexander Long Guthrie (born 1882 in Donegal, Ireland) and Mary Elizabeth Smythe (born 1887 in Fremantle, WA). James arrived in Fremantle, WA in December 1903 on board the Ophir. He was a Ward Attendant (at Whitby Hospital for the Insane) in 1907 when he and Mary married. James and Mary settled at Claremont where they raised their family, and James transferred to the new Mental Hospital in Claremont in 1909. He became Farm Manager in 1929 and through the years won many awards at the Royal Show for the Illawarra Short Horn cattle raised on the farm (Fremantle Welcome Wall: Panel No 347).

Bill was a Clerk at Claremont in 1937 when he married Ann (Annie) Deering (born  1905 in Perth, WA). Annie was a Clerk.

In August 1942 Bill enlisted in the RAAF and was a Corporal (Service No:427643) attached to RAAF Pearce when he was Discharged in July 1945. Younger brothers Robert Edmund (Flying Officer; Service No:406649) and Hugh Kitchener (Lance Corporal; Service No:19860) were both KiA in WWII and Brother-in-Law Albert Jack Barnett (Flying Officer; Service No:80625) also served in WWII.

Bill and Annie settled in Perth where Bill worked as a Clerk Annie died in 1976 and Bill in 1999.
