Ernest was the fourth of five children of Ernest Alfred Jerrems Snr (born 1878 in Sydney, NSW) and Esther Muriel Sassall (born 1885 in Lithgow, NSW). Ernest - a Paper Ruler - and Esther married in 1906 and settled in Sydney, NSW where they raised their family.

Ernest was a Chemist (working in Coonamble on the Darling Downs in QLD in 1937) and in 1939 married Haidee Brenda Smith (born 1910) in Sydney, NSW.

In January 1942 Ernest enlisted in the ACMF and was a Private (Service No:N458400) with 8 Battalion Volunteer Defence Corps when he was Discharged in November 1945. Brother George Roland also served in WWII.

Ernest and Haidee lived in Lane Cove, Gundagia and Coff's Harbour in NSW, where Ernest was a Chemist.He died in 1998 and Haidee in 2002.
