Donald was the eldest child of Donal Michael McSweeney (born 1894 in Sydney, NSW) and Ruby Hastings Aiken (born 1895 in Sydney, NSW). Donal (a Waggon Driver) and Ruby (a Machinist) married in 1916 in Newtown, Sydney, NSW. In 1918 Donal briefly enlisted with the AIF (Private, Service No:86554), and he and Ruby settled in Sydney where Donal worked as a Carrier and Lorry Driver.

Donald was a Clerk when he enlisted in the RAAF in February 1942 (Service No:421445). He served with 100 Squadron and was a Flight Lieutenant when he was Discharged in February 1948.

In 1942 Donald married Jean Ellen Mulligan (born 1917 in Sydney, NSW) - Jean worked as a Saleswoman. Donald and Jean settled in Sydney where Donald was a Clerk. He died in 1992 and Jean in 2008.
