Robert was the fourth of seven children of Robert Joseph Riddell (born 1890 in Gympie, QLD) and Alice Butler (born 1888 in Gympie, QLD). Robert Snr was a Miner in Gympie in December 1912 when he and Alice married. They later moved to Ipswich, QLD where Robert Snr was a Miner.

Robert was a Trapmaker in Maryborough QLD in June 1940 when he married Florence Sutton (born 1918 in Brisbane, QLD), In August 1942 Robert enlisted in the RAAF and was a Leading Aircraftman (Service No:77587) attached to  1 Air Observer School when he was Discharged in March 1945.

Robert and Florence lived in Maryborough, QLD, Robert died in 1990 and Flrence in 2012.
