William was the third of four children (and only son) of Robert Lawrie Doig (born 1867 in Williamstown in Melbourne, Victoria) and second wife Lillian Amelia Ladd (born 1875 in Collingwood, Melbourne, Victoria). Robert (a Grocer) and Lillian married in 1901 and settled in Williamstown in Melbourne to raise their family.

William worked as a Clerk in Melbourne, and in 1939 he married Lila Lorraine Andersen (born 1917 at Milne Bay in Papua New Guinea). William and Lila settled in Melbourne and in December 1941 William enlisted in the ACMF. He was a Private (Service No:V205546) with Bulk Issue Petrol and Oil Depot when he was Discharged in October 1943.

An Executive for the Shell Oil Coy from 1948, William lived and worked in Borneo and Nigeria before he and Lila retired to Frankston, Victoria in 1968. Lila died in 1977 and William in 1988.
