Thomas was the third of eleven children of Walter Curwen (born 1891 in Lancashire, England) and Emma Wainwright (born 1892 in Lancashire, England). Walter (a Labourer) arrived in Brisbane, QLD in March 1911 on board the Suffolk and Emma arrived in Brisbane, QLD in September 1906 on board the Ormuz. Walter was a Coal Miner when he and Emma married in 1912 in Ipswich, QLD and they lived briefly in Howard, Wide Bay, QLD before settling in Bundamba, Ipswich, QLD. Walter and Emma later lived at Esk on the Darling Downs, Goomerri in Wide Bay, and Murgon in QLD and at Emmaville, Clarence River and Bundarra in NSW.  Walter worked as a Bootmaker and Labourer.

Thomas was a Motor Mechanic in Melbourne, Victoria when he enlisted in the Australian Army (Service No:VX1210). He was a Staff Sergeant attached to 2/123 Brigade Workshops (Australian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers) when he was Discharged in November 1945. 

In 1950 Thomas was a Motor Mechanic in Sydney, NSW when he married Marjorie Norma Riley (born 1926 in Sydney, NSW) - Marjorie was a Postal Assistant. Thomas and Marjorie settled in Sydney, NSW where Thomas was a Motor Mechanic. He died in 1990 and Marjorie in 2001.
